I’ve been wondering if I want to share my random ramblings here. Not because of any sort of worry that it doesn’t suit my journal (what else are journal for?), but because most of my rambles are well. Not researched or anything. And I don’t wanna just have some half-baked rant on here for everyone to judge me on, but I don’t know if I have the motivation to verify that I wasn’t talking out of my ass. Thinking I’ll settle for access locking the rambles… I trust that the people who have access will not jump to bullying me if I’m actually being really stupid.

A blog is a good place to explore ideas. You don't necessarily have to set a stance on an issue just because you're mulling it over. "Don't believe everything you think" is sound advice. You don't have to research everything in depth if the issue is trivial -- nobody can research everything anyhow. If something nags at you, then you can always look it up later. Some people have a tag for "random thoughts" or the like.

An access list is a good way to keep people from picking on you. Some folks use filters to separate different topics and readers. You may also find it useful to put something in your profile about how you expect people to behave on your blog. "No bullying" is an excellent ground rule.

I'm happy I could help.

Plenty of us also have a "rant" tag. Sometimes you just need to scream into the void.

Oh, and you can turn off comments for individual posts if you don't want to talk about the thing.

Here is my set of resources for new users, which may also be helpful to people who've been offsite for a long time:

[community profile] newcomers has lots of resources about how to use Dreamwidth and where to find things you'll enjoy here. If you're coming from Tumblr, [personal profile] soc_puppet has posted tutorials for that angle. Find your Tumblr friends here.

The Follow Friday Master Post has lists of active communities by topic where you can look for some based on your interests, including some of the Most Useful Communities. Many bloggers use recurring posts to pin down their key interests and maintain activity, which is also a good source of inspiration if you aren't sure what you want to post yet.

>> I have looked at some of these previously (because of you!), and since I'm not sure if I've said it before, I'll just say it here: I'm very appreciative of your help! <<

Yay! That's good to hear.

>>The communities were especially useful because I've never been particularly good at pinning down exactly what I want to do/see, and thus what words describe those desires.<<

Yeah, I started the Follow Friday lists because it's hard to find active communities on DW and the search engine is dumb. It's much easier to scan a list of topics and click on the ones you like.
